At Westbrook Old Hall we believe that every child should be encouraged to enjoy maths and be a confident mathematician.

We focus on a mastery approach to maths, which helps students to acquire a deep and long-term mathematical understanding they can use in different real-life situations. We use White Rose to deliver our maths lesson and each lesson is made up of 3 sections:

  • 4-a-day/Get Ready – three or four questions that recap on previous learning

Or The Hook – an opportunity for the children to use the mathematical skills they have previously acquired in a problem-solving situation

  • Main teaching focus
  • Independent work

In every lesson the children are encouraged to use concrete resources to model and explore their maths at a deeper level. We use a ‘Concrete (make it), Pictorial (draw it), Abstract (write it)’ approach to ensure a solid understanding of what the numbers and calculations mean. Our calculation policy reflects this approach.

How can parents help?

So much of your child’s learning of maths happens at home. Playing games with your child, baking, telling the time are all great ways to help your child to practise their maths. Have a look at the long-term curriculum map for maths to see what your child is learning and ask them questions about their learning.
